Leiden, The Netherlands – We are excited to announce the launch of the IEEE CIS Task Force on Generative AI for Evolutionary Computation (GenAI4EC), chaired by Niki van Stein (LIACS, Leiden University), together with vice chairs Roman Senkerik (Tomas Bata University in Zlín) and Fei Liu (ETH Zurich & University of Zurich).
🧬 Generative AI inside EC, and EC for generating EC
The task force promotes research, development, and teaching of methods that combine generative AI — large language models in particular — with evolutionary computation. Its premise is that this intersection is fundamentally bidirectional:
- Generative AI inside EC: LLMs and other generative models as variation operators, candidate generators, and surrogate or selection mechanisms.
- EC for generating EC: LLM-driven evolutionary processes that discover novel metaheuristics, hyper-heuristics, and optimiser components.
The task force will organise special sessions, competitions, tutorials, and special issues at IEEE CIS venues, work towards shared evaluation protocols and reproducibility standards, and provide open benchmarks and educational material for the community.
This closely matches our own work on LLM-driven automated algorithm design (such as LLaMEA) and on rigorous benchmarking and explainability of evolutionary methods.
